| September 2008 Ellen George |
 We were much saddened to learn of the recent death of club member Mike George’s wife, Ellen. Certainly, the phrase ‘Behind every man is a good woman’ rings true with Mike and Ellen. At every major club meeting where a buffet was required Ellen organised the food with culinary mastery. And for our recent major production on Bristol’s slave-trading we needed a shot of molasses to illustrate the sugar trade. A close-up of Ellen’s pan of simmering marmalade mix came to the rescue!
At the deeply moving service of commemoration which took the form of a ‘life review’ by family members, we learned of Ellen’s long and dedicated involvement with fund raising for cancer research. Our thoughts are with Mike and his family at this time and we convey our heartfelt sympathies. Gordon Young |
| August 2008 Ray Buckland 1937–2008 |
 Seven of us from the club attended a Service of Thanksgiving for Ray Buckland, who died suddenly on 20 July. The Keynsham church was full to capacity and an adjoining room was also brought into use. There were certainly more than 150 there; testimony to Ray’s popularity and spread of interests. Four hymns were sung with gusto, especially the last – Guide me O thou great Jehovah (Bread of Heaven). The addresses and the eulogy were warm and moving but not sentimental and offered us glimpses of Ray’s early years and family life.
We’ll remember Ray with affection at the club and he has remembered us: I understand that the club is to receive a bequest as well as some of his video equipment. Gordon Young |

| May 2008 Premiere showing of "Encounters with John Wesley"

 It was full house for the first screening of our latest production. Over 60 invited guests were wined and dined and enjoyed a film that generated much discussion about production values and the relevance today of sermons preached by John Wesley over 250 years ago. |

| WE WON THE 2008 CHALLENGE SHIELD and lots of yummy goodies (whisky, wine and chocolates) with, "Broadmead". Members will recall this was a group exercise filmed last November about the redevelopment of Bristol's Broadmead shopping centre.
THIRD PRIZE went to James Gamble's version of the 'Project Vampire' exercise filmed last Autumn. Entitled,"Podvodnik" it terrified the audience into giving it the AUDIENCE AWARD!

| 13 January 2007 CHROMAFEST
Chromafest was an all day exercise to investigate all aspects of chromakey technique in a controlled and scientific manner. We looked for the answer to one very basic question: Is there a procedure whereby we amateur filmmakers can achieve a good chromakey result without having to use equipment and software we cannot afford.
The results will be presented at our next meeting and subsequently published here.

| 19 December 2006 A VERY SPECIAL PRESENTATION Bob Bennett has been a member for very many years, and not only given much of his free time but also shared his expertise as a photographer to help those who are taking their first steps in our hobby. We are delighted to present him with this award, with our thanks for all that he has achieved. |
The Mike Wertheim Trophy was given to BFVS by his widow, to be awarded to someone who had done something special for the Society. Mike was a very popular member, who was taken from us prematurely. |

| 19 September 2005 FORTHCOMING PREMIERE October 4th will see the premiere of 'The University of Bristol Botanic Garden at Bracken Hill'. The garden first started in 1882 on a small site at the junction of University Road and Woodland Road. Adolph Leipner, in whose honour a blue plaque has recently been installed, was given a grant of £15.00 to lay out the new garden and raised a further £89.15s. 4½d. for planting!! Over the years the site for the garden moved three times until it arrived at Bracken Hill in 1959 where it became well established. The site has recently been sold and the garden moved to its latest home at 'The Holmes' Stoke Park Road, Bristol. Nick Wray, the Curator, has appeared many times on 'Gardeners World' with the late Geoff Hamilton and had the experience to present an interesting video. The premiere will only include excerpts from the video as the total running time is 100 minutes, but will be enjoyable and informative.

In the last few days and with quite a bit of behind the scenes effort the club has now transferred a total of forty nine films from its library to make them available on loan to members on DVD.
This service is free and is yet another benefit of joining the club.

| 14 September 2005 BRISTOL VIDEO DIARY - 2004 In 1984 we filmed a video diary of some of the happenings in Bristol during that year. It was felt, twenty years later and in order to mark the seventieth year of the Society, that it was time to create an up to date version. So, during 2004 some eleven members went out and filmed twenty-six items to include in our new Diary. John Gorst (Producer) says, "It will be shortly ready for viewing and will be premiered on November 1st. I do hope you will enjoy it. It will be a valuable addition to the Club Archive for the years to come". |

19 April 2005 THE JACK BAKER TROPHY Chairman Bob Bennet won the Jack Baker trophy with his film, 'Scotland'. Bob says, 'I waited about 15 years to edit this and it had improved with the keeping!' Runner-up was Frank Bond's video, "15 miles from Poland" - a walking holiday in Slovakia. Also tonight Ron Elson was given an 80th birthday present. A couple of Laurel and Hardy DVDs now that Ron has joined the DVD revolution. |

Toy blocks were chosen for John's first animation video because they were simple to construct. The animation software used is available free on the Internet at www.blender.org. | RUNNER UP was Bob Bennett's video called "Just Hot Air" It was shot on his very first flight in a hot air balloon over Bath in 1999. He waited until now to edit the mini DV footage to music on a computer he purchased last year. |

13 June 2004 and Dragon Boat racing came to Bristol Docks to raise money for the National Osteoporosis Society. Bristol Film and Video Society had five members filming the event for inclusion in their 2004 Bristol Video Diary. |
| 6 June 2004 Our members followed the 'Gorge-ous Wildlife Family Funday' on Clifton Downs. This event entailed recording the nature trail arranged by the Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife Project. There were speakers giving talks on various wildlife matters at different points. Talks included history of the sheep which used to graze on the Downs, peregrine falcons which nest in the Avon Gorge, Bristol onions and other rare plants which grow in the Gorge to mention just a few. |

Material gathered for our 70th year production included the preparation of the bars and the opening of the festival. Following this, interviews with keen real ale, cider and perry tasters from across the country were conducted. |  |

3 February 2004 Miserable weather it may have been, but one of our film crews was out recording an end to a way of living. Prefabs are being removed in certain areas. Our crew captured one being taken apart in order to clear a way for other forms of housing. Following this, we interviewed the Chairman of The Prefab Preservation Group. Whilst this took place, another member was out capturing news closer to the City Centre. Although this may not be headline news when the production is edited at the end of the year, it may be worth looking back on in 50 years time. |

22 May 2003 We gave a showing of a video 'The Other Side Of The Play'. The main audience was The St Paul's Players, who meet in Southville, Bristol. They are a drama group who help us to a high degree when we require actors. The video, produced by Graham Egarr, shows the making of their play 'The Other Side Of The Sky' written and directed by Paul Williams. In addition, excerpts of the play - on video - were put together and shown to the audience. The video of the complete play - over two hours long - had been recorded by seven cameras. This resulted in the editor Martin Brown having 17 tapes to edit from. |

| 5 April 2003 A PARTY for the cast and helpers of our recently completed video 'Vernons Permutation' was held last Saturday.
We showed them the film; wined and dined them; amazed them with a 'full supporting programme' of out-takes (Vernon only lasts 13 minutes) and specially recorded stuff, and generally gave them a good time. We presented John Stevens (who played the title role in our film) with a framed poster used in the production. |

| 5 March 2003 Chairman Bob Bennett and Programme Secretary Peter Heaven visited the Gloucester Cine and Video Club to show 'Images in Time' and 'Vernons Permutation', both of which were much appreciated. It seems that their members are prolific with individual productions, whereas BFVS members support the larger club productions. This probably accounts for Gloucester having about 12 competitions a year with no lack of entries, and Bristol having just four competitions a year..... We would like to thank them for their hospitality, and commend them for their excellent venue and projection facilities. We would also like to thank the library (next door); having arrived in good time before their club room was open, the librarians were very welcoming and were able to provide a friendly cup of coffee! |
